Desk Report:
Rezia Begum (50) was admitted to Thakurgaon General Hospital with fever, weakness and vomiting. She is the wife of Azizul Islam, a daily wage worker from Lakshmipur area of Sadar Upazila. On Thursday afternoon, on the advice of a doctor, she prepared for the tests. For this, she had brought 5,000 taka from home. However, after getting into the hospital elevator, she realized that the money was missing.
Rezia Begum, crying in front of the hospital’s pathology department, said, “I have had two strokes. This money was my only hope. Everything has been stolen.” Her daughter Aduri was sitting next to Akhter and trying to comfort her mother. She also said in a tearful voice, “How can I get my mother tested now? We have no more money.”
The atmosphere inside the hospital became heavy with Rezia’s cries. At that time, patients and relatives in the vicinity said that such thefts often happen in the hospital. But it has not been possible to catch the thieves yet. The victims alleged that thieves and robbers are becoming more and more reckless day by day due to the lack of round-the-clock security in the hospital and the surrounding areas.
A relative of a patient named Shahidul said that his wallet was also taken from his pocket a few days ago. Another relative, Ali Akbar, said that 30,000 taka was stolen from a relative of his. He lost the money and returned home without seeking treatment.
Rokeya Begum, a social worker at the hospital, said, “Patients bring pain and sorrow here. It is truly inhumane to have their money stolen.” In this regard, the hospital’s medical officer, Manjurul Islam, said, “A request has been made to deploy police and Ansar in the hospital. Special measures are being taken to prevent theft.”
